Time:

Event Description:
It was a lie that saved the life of David Wolnerman of Des Moines, Iowa's last known survivor of the Nazi concentration camp. Wolnerman lied when he stood in line in 1940. Josef Mengele, the Nazi nicknamed "The Angel of Death," stood before him with a stick, pointing it to a line to the left or right as each person approached him. Wolnerman, then 13, noticed that the old, young and sickly were in a line to the left. When Mengele asked his age, Wolnerman said, "I am 18." Mengele pointed his stick to the right. The left line was eventually sent to the gas chambers. Wolnerman was freed by American soldiers on April 29, 1945. He was 18 years old and only 80 pounds.
He met his wife Jennie during his five-years in postwar Germany at the displaced persons camp. She had survived the concentration camp because a female Nazi guard "took a liking to her" and brought her a bowl of soup every day, which she shared a spoon at a time with her fellow prisoners. David and Jennie Wolnerman came to America in 1950.
The Urbandale Chamber of Commerce invites you to this very special October IMPACT Breakfast to listen to a fireside chat between Mayor Bob Andeweg and David Wolnerman to learn more from David what it was like to live in a concentration camp and by the grace of God, how he survived.
Immediately following the interview, Michael Wolnerman, David's son, will be available to answer questions.
The IMPACT Breakfast is designed to inspire and inform. Stories that have IMPACTED our community, our world, or our business. Join us as we spend the morning learning from each other and our special guest speakers.
