Topic- Food Insecurity: Causes, Impacts, and Solutions
Food insecurity is not a rural or urban issue – it affects all communities. Join us for a discussion on the impacts of food insecurity within communities, what led us to our current state, some of the biggest challenges facing our neighbors, and the role food banks play in helping to reduce the impacts of food insecurity.
A little about Michelle~
Michelle Book began her role as President and CEO of the Food Bank of Iowa on February 1, 2016. Food Bank of Iowa procures free and reduced cost food to help 175,000 food insecure Iowans across 55 counties in Iowa’s central corridor and southeast corner. Earlier in her career, Michelle worked at MidAmerican Energy, John Deere, and DuPont Pioneer.
Michelle serves as a director on the Brenton Arboretum board. She is also a member of the Des Moines Noon Rotary and the Nexus Executive Women’s Alliance. Michelle was honored to be recognized as a Des Moines Woman of Influence in 2014.
Michelle is originally from Jefferson, Iowa and resides in Des Moines. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in accounting from Iowa State University. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Internal Auditor. Her career has spanned opportunities in hog farming, health care, international finance and business management. In her free time, she enjoys sharing great food with interesting people, relaxing with yoga, and recreating in nature.
