Walter Cannon, professor of English, will read from his new book “Who Hears in Shakespeare?” for the Writers Reading series.
His book examines ways in which Shakespeare’s plays are designed for hearers as well as spectators. To look at the acoustic world of the plays involves a paradigm shift that changes how the audience understands virtually everything about Shakespeare’s plays: from the architecture of the buildings, to playing spaces, to blocking, to larger interpretative issues, including the understanding of character based on players’ responses to what they hear, mishear or refuse to hear. Cannon will be reading in the Geisler Library Reading Room at 7:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
