About the Botanical Garden
In January 2013, after years of planning, a bold vision, generous community support and new staff, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden assumed operatorship of the iconic geodesic conservatory and 14 acres of land on the east side of the Des Moines River. Armed with a mission of exploring, explaining and celebrating the world of plants, the Botanical Garden is a 501(c)(3) privately governed, not-for-profit institution. The Botanical Garden reopened its doors to 2,700 visitors in September 2013 after a three-month closure, as construction continued on Phase I exterior gardens. Those gardens will be completed in 2014, with an anticipated grand opening in early October. The $6.2 million We Are a Garden Now campaign continues to raise money to fund the development of two additional gardens and expansion of the Botanical Garden's curatorial and educational programs and its endowment.
