INAUGURAL ANNIE’S RIDE EVENT TO BENEFIT MERCY RUAN NEUROLOGY CLINIC HELD Saturday, October 8, 2016
The first annual Annie’s Ride will take place October 8 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton. There are three distance routes for all levels of cyclists. An 80 mile ride starts at the track at 11 am and heads towards Pella. The 40 mile ride begins at 12 pm and the 10 mile ride will take place around the speedway track at 2 pm.
Tickets are $60 for adults and $25 for youth riders. The price also includes access to the after party. There will be in field activities and food trucks. The event committee is thrilled to announce the widely popular Des Moines based band, the Nadas, will perform a special concert just for Annie’s Ride at 6 pm. Tickets (for non-cyclists) to attend the concert are $25.
The purpose of Annie’s Ride is to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis and the incredible medical staff at the Mercy Ruan Neurology Clinic, led by internationally renowned Dr. Bruce Hughes. The inspiration for the event came from one of Dr. Hughes patients, Annie O’Dell. In 1998, during her senior year of college, Annie had blurry vision and numbing in her hands. Tests discovered Annie had multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Annie’s symptoms became so severe that in 2014 she spent 194 days in the hospital.
It was during that time, Dr. Hughes and his partners at the Mercy Ruan Neurology Clinic provided Annie with exceptional care. Dr. Hughes researched new data around chemotherapy in MS patients and ordered it for Annie. She was the first patient in Des Moines to receive this opportunity and it stopped the disease from worsening. Today Annie lives at home with her husband and daughter. The disease is still there, but she has beaten insurmountable odds.
Annie’s brother, Chris Andrews, the event organizer, said, “This ride will raise money to allow the fantastic team in Dr. Hughes’ office and the Mercy Ruan Neurology Clinic to offer these services and resources to so many who can’t access them. 100% of our money will stay local!”
