SUMMARY:Untapped Talent: Returning Citizens
DESCRIPTION:Employers can make a significant impact in transforming a criminal liability into a community asset. \n\n\n\nReturning citizens who are unemployed remain at a greater risk of re-offending compared to those who have employment. Each year between 5\,000 and 6\,000 inmates are released from Iowa's nine correctional institutions and face considerable hurdles to find employment and avoid returning to prison. An alarming 70% of children with an incarcerated parent are most likely to follow in their footsteps. \n\n\n\nJoin our session where we will share current practices with employers and community providers that are helping to reduce this rate of unemployment and the cycle of incarceration in families. \n\n\n\nDuring our time\, you will be able to participate in a simulation experience and hear from two Iowa employers\, Natalie McNaught from UnityPoint Health and Dennis Henderson from Broadlawns Medical Center who will share how they have successfully recruited and integrated returning citizens in their workplace. Also included in the discussion\, will be community resources that employers can use to help you with your hiring practices.
